UK Compulsory National Identity Cards
Conclusion
Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety
- Benjamin Franklin
The Government has repeatedly changed its alleged reasons for
introducing ID Cards. This must make us suspicious as to the
true motives.
The alleged benefits of the cards are unlikely to be seen.
The scheme will cost huge amounts of money and amount to a
New Labour Poll Tax.
They have deliberately lied about the public attitude to the cards.
There are massive potential dangers to privacy and civil liberties inherent
in the scheme.
The Government has given assurances that the cards will not be
abused but we know from past experience that such assurances are
worthless.
The Government has admitted that every use of the ID Card will be logged centrally.
Compulsory National Identity Cards turn citizens into suspects and
deprive people of privacy.
This Government must not
be allowed to turn the civil liberties clock back fifty years.
